According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), a total of 49 states and the District of Columbia reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes in 2018. Overall, 2,544 cases of West Nile virus disease in people were reported, 137 of which turned deadly, 16 in the state of Illinois.
